 - Falls – Falling into an open trench can cause severe injuries.
 - Hazardous Atmosphere – Lack of oxygen or presence of toxic gases.
 - Struck-By and Caught-In Hazards – Heavy machinery and loose materials can cause injuries.
 - Underground Utilities – Gas, electrical, and water lines can be dangerous if struck.
 
Key Safety Precautions for Excavation Work
1. Pre-Work Inspection
- Conduct a site inspection before starting excavation.
 - Check for underground utilities using locators and permits.
 - Identify soil type and potential hazards.
 
2. Protective Systems Against Cave-Ins
- Sloping – Cutting back the trench wall at an angle.
 - Shoring – Installing supports to prevent collapse.
 - Shielding (Trench Boxes) – Protective structures placed in the trench.
 
3. Safe Access and Egress
- Ladders, ramps, or stairways must be provided every 25 feet.
 - Never jump into or out of an excavation.
 
4. Atmosphere Testing

However, if shoring or a trench box was used, the collapse risk would be minimized, and the worker would be protected.
